7 Things You Need to Know about EBT in Maine
I’ve been updating this list for years now, and I’ve learned quite a bit along the way. There are some things that many people don’t know about EBT in Maine!
- Apply for Maine food stamps online. I’ve had many people tell me that the only reason they don’t have food stamps is because they’re too embarrassed to go into the office. You can apply online and skip the lines!
- Did you know you can buy this?! You can buy seeds and produce-bearing plants with your Maine food stamps card! You can also buy certain gift baskets, birthday cakes and fruit trees.
- Shop smart. You may be able to get more food for your money at farmer’s markets and You-Pick Strawberry Fields!
- You may be eligible for more food stamps. Eating well on a food stamps budget can be hard. Sometimes, it’s downright impossible! The meager amount that you’re awarded each month may not be sufficient to actually buy the food you need. Since we’ve found the exact algorithm they use, we’ve also found a few ways you may be able to increase your monthly award!
- You can get cash back from your food stamps card! It’s true and it’s legal – no cash benefits required. One of our readers earned an additional $437.84 just by shopping with her food stamps card. She uses that extra money to buy diapers, wipes and other essentials.
- You can shop at many places. Some retailers, such as Farmer’s Markets, often offer double-up programs where you can get twice as much food as you pay for. Bulk retailers like Costco also accept food stamps. Here’s a list of places that accept EBT.
- You can use your EBT card in other states! Not only can you shop in other states, you can also get EBT discounts in other states. All of our state lists use green titles to indicate what venues accept out-of-state EBT cards for discounts.

Augusta
Maine State Museum – Unknown
Discover the Maine State Museum’s exhibits by clicking here! Although not an EBT-specific discount, the admission for Maine State Museum is less than many Museums for All partners.
Due to renovations, the museum is currently closed with plans to reopen in late 2023. Their admission prices for that time aren’t currently set, but they are committed to making the museum accessible to all Mainers.
Bath
Maine Maritime Museum – $3 or less per person
The Maine Maritime Museum occupies 20 stunning acres along the Kennebec River. The museum includes galleries an exhibits indoors, as well as many outdoor experiences. You can walk through the country’s only surviving shipyard to see where the large wooden sailing vessels were built. You can also see a full-size sculpture of the largest sailing vessel ever built in North America. A Victorian-era home is also open seasonally for tours. Daily cruises can show you some of Maine’s most iconic lighthouses and the museum also includes a working boat shop! There’s a pirate play ship for children as well.
Hinckley
LC Bates Museum – Unknown
The L. C. Bates Museum is full of unique curiosities and Maine wildlife dioramas. They also have forest walking trails, an arboretum, a fern walk and butterfly garden.
South Berwick
Hamilton House – $2 per person
The Hamilton House is a striking Georgian mansion. It is also a designated National Historic Landmark. It was built in 1785, on a bluff overlooking the Salmon Falls River.
Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum & Visitor Center – $2 per person
Writer Sarah Orne Jewett was born in this house, which once belonged to her grandparents. It was the inspiration for her novel Deephaven. It is a National Historic Landmark.
Standish
Marrett House – $2 per person
In 1796, Daniel Marrett moved to Standish. He bought the most imposing house in town and three generations of his family resided there.
Portland
Children’s Museum & Theater of Maine – $3 per person
Experience the magic and wonder of the Children’s Museum & Theater of Maine for just $3 per person! The museum features outdoor exhibits and numerous playscapes, including a farmer’s market, town, wellness center and more.
Portland Museum of Art – FREE
The admission is usually $18 for adults or $15 for seniors and students. However, it’s free with an EBT card! The museum is also free for everyone on Friday evenings between 4-8 pm, and is also always free to those 21 years old and under.
Waldoboro
Old German Meetinghouse – FREE
Built in 1772, this meetinghouse has been well-preserved and is free to the public. It is open all week during the summer and on fall weekends.
Waterville
Colby Museum of Art – FREE
The Colby Museum has an extensive and diverse collection of contemporary and American art. There are more than 8,000 pieces in the collection. There are also rotating exhibitions. This museum is free for everyone, not just EBT cardholders.
Wiscassett
Castle Tucker – $2 per person
The Castle Tucker was built in 1807, on a hill near the Sheepscot River. It highlights the history of Mollie and Richard Tucker, as well as their five children.
Nickles-Sortwell House – $2 per person
This National Historic Landmark is considered “one of the region’s finest Federal-style houses.” It was built by Captain William Nickles in 1807.
York Harbor
Sayward-Wheeler House – $2 per person
Shipping merchant Jonathan Sayward bought this house in 1735. The interior is believed to be one of the best preserved in the nation.
Statewide
You can also get great discounts on museum admission through local library pass programs!
